Puppet Craft And Drama: A HASS 4 Kids Puppetry Program
Puppet Craft And Drama is a practical, hands-on program where children have the opportunity to make a simple puppet, learn the push and pull design mechanisms of different puppets, discover a range of materials that can be used to make puppets, practice playing with puppets together, and have a go at performing a puppet show – all while making HASS (Humanities, Arts & Social Science) education engaging and fun.
This play-based learning program shares a vision for children’s learning aligned with The Early Years Learning Framework for Australia – drawing on principles of early childhood pedagogy that informs children’s learning, development and wellbeing specifically:
- adopting holistic approaches;
- planning and implementing play-based learning with intentionality;
- creating physical, temporal, intellectual, social and emotional environments;
- and providing for continuity in experiences and enabling effective transitions.
The program is also aligned to English, Drama, Visual Arts, and Design and Technology learning areas of the Australian School Curriculum, specifically:
- supporting a students’ understanding of how puppets work in action, with a view to designing and making a simple puppet;
- understanding how force and movement is created using materials;
- supporting a students’ understanding of different artistic practices;
- creating and co-creating fictional situations based on imagination and/or experience;
- using puppets to create new stories, including stories that communicate their understanding of existing stories or personal experiences; and
- using puppets they have made from repurposed or recycled materials.

These classes are currently only being delivered in City of Moreton Bay, Northern Brisbane suburbs and Southern Sunshine Coast suburbs.
Zietta means “the fun Aunty” in Italian. Elissa is of Italian (specifically Sicilian) descent on her Mother’s side. Zietta Elissa is a professional puppeteer and performing artist with a Master of Arts in Social Science.
Puppet Craft And Drama Program with Larrikin Puppets
Option 1: 1 Module (1 x 45 minute class):
Zietta Elissa runs a practical, highly interactive class where children have the opportunity to play with a selection of 25 hand puppets, folk puppets and finger puppets. Together we learn how to make puppets talk, move, sing, dance and tell stories.
Option 2: 4 Modules (4 x 45 minute classes/visits):
Module 1: Zietta Elissa runs a practical, highly interactive class where children have the opportunity to play with a selection of 25 hand puppets, folk puppets and finger puppets. Together we learn how to make puppets talk, move, sing, dance and tell stories.
Module 2: Zietta Elissa presents a puppet craft workshop. Students learn how to:
- make a simple paper puppet with eyes and a moving mouth
- make a puppet using recycled materials or found objects
- create a narrative story using their new puppets
Module 3: Zietta Elissa presents a Shadow Puppet Craft Workshop. Using super fun and colourful puppetry kits featuring a range of pre-cut materials, Elissa teaches students how to construct a simple shadow puppet.
Module 4: Zietta Elissa runs a practical, highly interactive class where children have the opportunity to play with their shadow puppets and perform behind a shadow puppet theatre. A darkened room is required for this activity.
